Different
people different stories. That's what you'll come across
in this small town of Waveland MS. Be it the old man down the
block that split his wrist wide open while busting through the
roof of his home because the flood waters got so high. Or the
lady in that beach house that stayed and lost her life. You will
also hear of some that left too late and got trapped in their
cars on Iinterstate 10 waiting on top of their floating cars.
Some stories
of survival but so many of death. Like the family of 6 that stayed
in their homes because they thought they were well inland. It
has NEVER flooded there. Only 2 survived.
Day after
day while cleaning up the debris people wonder how many more bodies
will be found. Just last Monday three more were found. This is
now almost six months later. So much destruction caused by Katrina.
Waveland,
MS was ground 0. We got the winds and we got the water. We lost
95% of the homes here and currently only have 40% of our population
back. Many have FEMA campers but many are still displaced because
it's taking so long to get a trailer. Some living in tents just
to be "home".
South of the
tracks, which are homes that are on the beach, is totally destroyed.
Most of these homeowners cant even put a FEMA trailer on their
properties because there still is no water and sewage and the
destruction is just too bad.
Much has been
cleared but to outsiders it looks as if nothing has been touched.
It will take many years to build this town back. Without the help
of others the town will NEVER be the same. Many did not have flood
insurance because they were in NO flood zones. Even during Hurricane
Camille most of the town did not get water. Katrina totally destroyed
Waveland MS. EVERYTHING was underwater. Over an 80 foot wave,
and over a 30 foot tidal surge just bore down with no pity. Not
to mention the high winds that did their own damage.
People here in south Mississippi are just down to earth people
who have true southern hospitality. Their spirits were brought
down by this tragic national disaster but we can help them build,
not only their homes and town back, but also their confidence.
We can give them hope again. We can not change what has happened,
but yet make the worst experience of their lives turn into an
experience that they will NEVER forget. Lets all pull
together and make Operation: Waveland, MS
the biggest success yet!!!!
