26 & Cortney, 21 11/10/06 Update: Cortney and Randy recieved a FEMA trailer to replace their camper however it could not be placed in Waveland, so the family had to buy property about 10 miles north to put it on. They still have their mortgage on a house they no longer have and are awaiting any kind of assistance. Cortney's third child was born October 5.
We weren't expecting it to get too bad. We were wrong! The wind started howling & trees were snapping and uprooted all around us. We watched siding and shingles fly off the the house next door....We herded the kids into the hall and secured the doorway with a mattress. Shortly after, a tornado hits the house across the street tearing up the roof. Everyone is terrified... ...Finally the winds die down some and we think it is safe. Immediately I get in the truck to find my Dad. The roads are blocked... all we see is water... we see cows walking down the Interstate... everything is underwater... everyone is in shock... When we saw our house we were devastated. My husband and I married very young and he has worked so hard to give us a good life. It was heartbreaking to see everything he worked so hard for destroyed. We had insurance. Our insurance company paid us $138... Our home needs to be leveled... It's a big mess and we feel like we are alone in this. We have two small children and one on the way, so we have to do something soon. We are grateful for this FEMA camper but unless you live in one yourself, you can't know how miserable it is. My kids have stayed sick since we started staying in it, because cold air comes in through the windows. The doors and shower leaks. It stays very damp in here and our clothes and bed stay wet and mildew. Bugs get in through the windows and the shower and my kids have bites on them. My kids have no where to play or have their own space. Please help us! Thank you for your time. God Bless. Cortney
