In December 2013, the City of Saratoga Springs convened a meeting of community service leaders to develop a response to the recent death by freezing of Nancy Pitts — a long term Saratoga resident who had become homeless. This resulted in the first Code Blue shelter.
The Giving Circle played a major role in creating the city’s first Code Blue emergency shelter. The shelter opens on severe weather nights to provide the homeless with a hot meal and a warm bed for the night. All homeless are welcomed with no restrictions or qualifications.
- Participate actively in the Code Blue Saratoga steering committee guiding overall operations.
- Created and operate the technology infrastructure to coordinate volunteer communications and scheduling.
- Headed the Committee to find a permanent home for Code Blue.
- Serve as volunteers whenever the shelter is open.
